Here is a story of my recent news heading in the 2012 AMA Pro Racing Daytona 200. The 1st race of the 2012 AMA Pro Road Racing motorcycle Superbike and Daytona Sportbike season.

Last year some of you know, team owner Richie Morris called me. He gave me the offer of coming to pit crew during the Inagural race at Daytona for the newly AMA Vance & Hines Harley- Davidson XR1200 Spec Class. For 2 days I would be wearing the famous Richie Morris Racing ( RMR ) Bruce Rossmeyer Daytona Racing – Geico Powersports team colors. Along side 3 other crew men.. We set out to crew for 3 RMR XR1200 race bikes. The results in the end where a 1st, 2nd and 9th place finish for the 3 team bikes. It was a proud moment and a day I sure will not forget.

As we get closer to March and Daytona time.. Many teams are changing riders, sponsors and crew men. Once of the biggest changes so far was the news that Erik Buell Racing was going to race 2 bikes. His newest rider, Danny Eslick… With the new comes the need of a crew chief and crew men.. That news will be said later in this story..

I was contacted by my good friend since 2008 Mike Kirkpatrick.. Perhaps the best crew chief around.. and the most knowlegable about Buells. Mike asked if I was coming to Daytona in 2012. I said I plan on it!! He said great and wanted me to help him pit crew with him for Paul James’s XR1200 #70 entry. We then would switch gears and pit crew for Pat Mooney’s #41 Buell 1125r Daytona Sportbike. Pat is returning to make a 2nd Daytona 200 attempt after last years crazy tire issues race. I was Pat Mooney’s fuel man in 2011 during the Daytona 200.

I told Mike that I will see him in Daytona and be ready to help him out with both bikes. He told me thank you and that we would keep in touch as the day draws closer to race time. A few days later it was announced by Erik Buell Racing that Danny Eslick’s new crew chief now would be Mike Kirkpatrick. This is a huge promotion and dream come true for my good friend Mike. It also looks to perhaps put a bitter sweet end to Paul James and Mike being together for the near past 8 years.

I then became kinda stumped about what I would be doing now that I have gotten things set up to be at the track in daytona. Would i still be helping pit crew? Who would it be for? Is Pat Mooney still going to race in the daytona 200? What is Paul James going to do without help now in daytona?

A day went by as I was questioning all this.. Then an email came from my friend Paul James.. this is what it said:

Hey man, who are you working with at Daytona? I might need some help…LOL!! I quickly replied to Paul to let him know I was coming to help him with Mike. Since Mike is now off to the EBR superbike team. I’m coming now to surly help Paul with his XR1200 effort in Daytona.

Things still now were open on the Daytona 200. Paul and I talked on the phone later in the week. Cleared the air of all the news and happenings. He would then call Pat Mooney and find out his Daytona plans. Soon after I then hear from Pat Mooney on Facebook. He is gearing up for 2012 Daytona and “Banking on some good pit stops This year BJ, especially with you on the Fuel! ” That was some really cool news to read.. Once again I would be with Pat Mooney’s Buell for Daytona for a 2nd year in a row and my 3rd straight appearance in the Daytona 200 as a crew man and fuel man. (2010 was with Walt Sipp #221 finished 20th place).

It was really great to just let all the plans fall into place. Come March, I will head down to Daytona Florida for the 71st Daytona 200. Its going to be great to see my Buell racing friends Mike Kirkpatrick, Pat Mooney, Paul James and any others.. Become a part of motorcycle racing history once again! If you can’t make it to Daytona March 16th and 17th for these races. You can catch the AMA Daytona 200 on SPEED tv. Check your local listing or contact your cable tv provider to watch this historic motorcycle race!

B.J. ordered his second round of shirts in October. With the month being October, Several different themes and ideas came to mind, but was an easy choice when it came down to it.

We decided to help raise money to help find a cure for breast cancer. Every shirt sold from this order (with the pink ribbons on the sleeve) will have $5 donated to his friends Mona and Elizabeth to help them reach their goals for when they walk 60 miles over three days to help raise money to find a cure. (Susan G. Komen 3-day for the cure). They will be walking a total of 60 miles over a 3 day period in Nov. of 2012.

A special thanks to Blue Collar Press for the speedy service and doing such a great job on the shirts! We have them available in black and white.

These shirts have been going fast, and we almost left them off this site because we thought we might run out as quickly as we got them. Then decided we’d just order more if needed.

If you would like to Donate to help Mona or Elizabeth raise money for the Susan G. Komen organization, follow <a title="Donate to Susan G.
If your organization would like to raise money to help support your cause, use the contact form and let B.J. know that you would like to be on our next order of shirts. We are also actively looking into getting some hats made for future events and for sale.

It’s taken me a little while to make this post on bearracing and update the store page, thanks in advance for supporting bearracing! Get your shirts today here!

Don’t want to pay for a shirt? But still want to sport the awesomeness of this or another design? Become a fan on facebook and watch for prizes coming as soon as the beginning of 2012!

On August 13th B.J. De Jong showed up with a Buell XB12R Firebolt racebike named Starr. Owned and built by friend and fellow pit crew member Alex Oppermann of the James Gang Racing team. B.J.’s plan was to enter into the M.C.R.A. race weekend event. Before he could enter any races. He had to complete a racers license clinic and pass before getting a race license to enter any races over the Aug 13th and 14th weekend.

B.J. set up list looking at the cost it would be to do the race weekend. With this in mind, he started searching for some sponsor help. He went about promoting himself as if he was already a racer trying to get sponsor money for the races he might not even be able to enter. Knowing this it put some pressure into making sure he would perform well in the racers license clinic. B.J. De Jong of bearracing was able to secure two great sponsors in our local area here in Kansas. A & H Air Conditioning, Heating and Plumbing in Baldwin Ks, and DC Custom Crafted Cycles in Eudora Ks came on board to help with funding for the weekend. Thank You!

We showed up at the track Saturday morning for the racers clinic. Took some class room instructions, went out for some on track riding. Back to the classroom again for discussion and instructions. Then back out to the track again for more motorcycle racing. Once that was done, we took a written test and a mock race. The written test had to be passed before we could participate in the mock race. With the written test passed it was time to head out to the track for the mock race.

Rules of the mock race:

Follow the flags and race boards

Don’t crash in the race!

There were 8 riders in the racer license class, B.J. rode his buell racebike to a 5 place finish in the mock race earning his race license!

Next, was the Saturday Sportsman race. 13 riders where entered in the race. B.J. was now a licensed racer and was able to enter any remaining saturday races. So he entered the Sportsman race. Starting dead last in the 25min long race on the 2.5 mile Heartland Park Topeka road course. Once the green flag waved B.J. nailed the throttle and with a huge wheelie off the starting line found himself heading into turn 1 in 2nd place. After the next few turns he fell to 3rd. Settling into place on the track and holding pace with the top leaders.

With a the race half way over, B.J.’s #27 Buell started to reel 2nd place back in. Pushing the limits in turn 12 would be costly as the #27 Buell’s rear tire struck a seal in the track going to0 wide in the turn. This upset the handling of the bike, sending it off track. With the recent rain, the grassy area proved to be a place of no grip for tires of race boots. As B.J. put his foot down to slow and gain control, the muddy soft wet grass gave way and B.J. fell over in the mud. With his hand still on the clutch, bike still running, he got back up and picked the bike up only to see all the other riders pass right by on the track.

He would get back on the track and come home in 12th place of the 13 rider field with only a few minutes left in the race.

The Saturday wasn’t a total waste as the main goal was to get the race license. Then to get some experience for Sunday’s race on the 14th. With the off track experience on Saturday, the main goal for Sunday’s race was to just stay on track and not fall down. B.J.’s best friend Clint Barnett would show up Sunday morning to take charge of the A & H, DC Custom Cycles bearracing #27 Buell. To be the Crew Chief of the bearracing team. Attending to a little cosmetic damage, and changing tires. Clint would get the #27 Buell in great shape for Sunday’s race. Clint’s wife Jessica, and daughter Cora would join him for part of the day.

After the drivers meeting we took the bike to tech inspection, and to get our transponder for the race. It was then time for practice. B.J. was a little leary on new tires running a lap time of 2:12.00 in the first 2 practice sessions of the morning. Crew man Joey Cassity would take lap times, and aide in getting Sunoco race fuel for the bike. Crew man James Colbert would help with tire warmers and race stands. Heather Swenson and baby Jolene would also be at the track for support and take pictures. AMA pro rider Walt Sipp also joined us in our pit area to give B.J. some tips on what race line to take.

During the final practice of the day we where able to click off a lap time of 2:08.00. That felt pretty good being on a borrowed racebike.

At the start of the race B.J. lined up on the 1 row of his race class on the outside line. On the drop of the green flag, the Buell would pull a huge wheelie again off the starting line. Heading into turn one. Two riders got around B.J. and he ran the the full 25 min sprint race with out a crash. Once the checkard flag waved and the riders pulled into the finish area and victory lane. B.J. was greeted with a 3rd place trophy in the MCRA GTL-AM race. The trophy was designed by racer Hector St. John. He also got $45.00 cash $40.00 in gift certificates for motorcycle items. All in all the weekend was pretty successful. The bearracing team would like to thank everyone mentioned here. B.J. would like to personally thank those sponsors for all their help! Looking forward to doing it again next race season!!

B.J. entered into the July 31st Heartland Park Motorcycle track day. This was to prepare for the upcoming MCRA race weekend on August 13th and 14th, 2011. He entered into the Novice class during this track day event. The motorcycle he was racing with was a Buell XB12R Firebolt race bike, provided by Alex Opperman of the James Gang Racing team.

His goal was to become familiar with the new race bike and to gain experience at the HPT. This was in preparation to Aug.13th and 14th MCRA race weekend. He will be attempting to acquire a race license by completing the clinic that’s available on that weekend.

B.J. was the fastest in his novice class on the Buell racing bike. He lapped the field on the 2.5 mile road course. He handled the bike as if it was an old friend that he was used to.

It was a hot and steamy day for spectators in shorts, I can only imagine how the racers felt with full gear. It was still an awesome day, and I look forward to attending more races in the future.

If you love motorcycles and original artwork, you’ll love to get to see these choppers on display at Union Station in KC MO.

This event will be going on until Sept. 25th, 2011 at Union Station in Kansas City. Ticket prices when I went were: Adults 13-59 $12.50. Seniors, college students and military with valid ID $9.50. Children 3-12 (2 adn under FREE) $9.50.

I recommend anyone and everyone who can see the awesome masterpieces of art in person to do so. You can easily spend several hours reading all the literature and history of these choppers and their makers. If you aren’t able to make it in person, I hope you’ll enjoy the pictures of the choppers I took and am sharing here with you.

A couple of recommendations if you are able to make it:

Use the restroom before you go in! Once you leave, they won’t be forgiving and let you back in.

Don’t touch the artwork. This was a tough one for me, but out of respect for the artists themselves and the machine they created, I just took a lot of pictures instead.

Some gloves that I have used on and off the bike! When I’m out riding the streets of Kansas. I have found that the Buell Bolt Summer Textile gloves and pretty decent. They are a good summer glove with pretty good fit and feel for pretection. I also use another pair of these gloves for wrenching and hand protection in the garage area. They come in blue with white accents and full black. As well as a grey with white accents in full black. These gloves are getting hard to find these days as Buell items in whole are getting are to find as well.

Another glove I really like is the Buell Turbulent Leather Full Finger Glove. This also is a short style hand glove. Though made of leather it works well on cooler days. Provides great protection all the way around. I have had the privledge of crashing at 70mph with these gloves on. They protected my hands really well! All my fingers and skin where fine.. Yes alittle sore but the padding did its job well. Like all other Buell items, these gloves as well are getting hard to find mainly because the are all branded with cool Buell lettering and logos. If i could find another pair of these I would buy them right away! The Bolt glove sells from any where between $10.00 – $60.00. While the Turbulent glove gos for around $40.00- $85.00. Both well worth the price to me, to saving the skin on my hands!

For the race track you would need to look into a gaunlet style glove. Which is a longer glove that covers past your wrist. These offer maxium protection on the race track for high speed. While nothing will ever save you from getting hurt or killed. Wearing the right protection is way better than having nothing on at all!
